DIY Home Décor: Does Your Home Tell Your Story?

There's not a single room in our house that hasn't been affected by my furniture-flipping obsession. And I'm not just talking about furniture. I've often said that if it doesn't move, it's in danger of getting painted!

But here's something I've been thinking about lately. We furniture artists spend hours making things beautiful for other people's homes. We learn to paint, stencil, create texture, combine colors, and turn outdated furniture into something special. But are we using those same skills to make our own homes a reflection of who we are?

You know that old saying about the cobbler's children having no shoes? I don't want that to be us.

Over the years, I've used my furniture-artistry skills all over our house. One of my favorite projects is an antique door I repurposed into entryway décor. I spray painted one side red and the other brown so I could change the look whenever I wanted. I added hooks, a mirror, and decorative details that make it both useful and attractive.

I also turned an antique window into living room wall art and used specialty paints, stencils, and layered colors to decorate the hallway leading to our master bedroom.

To the right is the video I took of the finished project several years ago - I've since added photos to the left and to the right now holds my upcycled antique typesetter drawer that holds my essential oils. And yes, I paid $8 for that typesetter drawer - somehow $8 ends up being the price of a lot of my project pieces.

One day I'll show you my entry way hall, kitty bathroom and laundry room. None of those projects were created to sell. They were created for us to enjoy.

And that's my point. The skills you develop as a furniture artist are valuable even when they don't earn you a dime.

Your home doesn't need to look like a decorating magazine. It should reflect your personality, your memories, and the things that make you happy.

In Episode 60 of the Flipping Furniture for Profit Podcast, we're talking about bringing those creative skills home, recognizing how much you've learned, and discovering possibilities you may have overlooked.
