The Great Paint Debate: Stop Blaming the Paint
New to flipping? ValFrania.com/LearnToFlip
If you’ve ever stood in your workshop staring at a piece wondering why the finish didn’t turn out the way you hoped… you’re not alone.
Most beginners assume the problem must be the paint.
Wrong brand. Wrong color. Wrong product.
But after years of flipping furniture, I’ve learned something important:
It’s usually not the paint.
In this week’s podcast episode of Flipping Furniture for Profit, we’re continuing The Great Paint Debate series by talking about something that affects every furniture artist eventually—method.

Same Paint. Different Results.
One of the biggest mindset shifts in furniture flipping is realizing that paint is a tool—not magic.
The same exact paint can produce completely different finishes depending on:
- how it’s applied
- the tools being used
- dry times
- humidity
- temperature
- or even your mischievous cat 🙂
That’s why one person loves a paint while another person says they’ll never use it again.
We all work differently. We apply products differently. We have different expectations and styles.
And honestly? That’s part of what makes creative work so interesting.
Inspiration Over Duplication
I once hosted a furniture challenge where people recreated one of my designs using the same inspiration piece.
Every single project turned out differently.
And that was a good thing.
Furniture flipping isn’t about becoming a carbon copy of another artist. It’s about learning techniques, experimenting, and developing your own creative instincts over time.
That’s why I always encourage beginners to look for inspiration—not duplication.
Final Thoughts
Getting a smooth finish with no brush strokes has very little to do with chasing the “perfect” paint.
More often than not, it comes down to understanding your materials… your process… and how paint behaves over time.
That kind of knowledge doesn’t happen overnight.
It comes through experimenting, learning, making mistakes, adjusting, and continuing to grow as an artist.
And honestly? That’s part of the fun.
Keep learning. Keep refining. Keep creating.
And remember—progress beats perfection every time.
